What are the benefits of aerating my lawn?Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This helps the roots grow deeply and produce a stronger, more vivacious lawn. The majority of lawns will benefit from aeration, especially high traffic areas where the grass can become compacted. When grass gets compacted, it restricts water absorption, water drainage, and air circulation to the roots, eventually leading to thin, brown, worn out grass.

What is overseeding?Overseeding is the process of sowing seed into the existing lawn without having to dig it up and start over from scratch. This is usually done by first aerating the lawn so the seed can really get into the soil. Lawns that look thin, worn out, or starting to look unhealthy will benefit greatly from overseeding. When you have your lawn overseeded it is very important to water your grass more than “normal” and keep the soil very moist until the grass has grown in thick. This method is less expensive than tearing up an existing lawn or adding sod but requires a little more work in the beginning steps.

What are the benefits of mulch?Mulch helps prevent unsightly weeds and consume water to help your plants and shrubs stay healthy. Holds in soil moisture, protecting your plants from drying out quickly. Moderates soil-temperature fluctuations (This benefit is especially valuable during that turbulent-weather period in spring when you don't want your plants to be stressed.) In cold-winter weather, mulch protects plant roots and helps prevent frost-heaving, in which plants are literally pushed out of the ground by the natural expansion and contraction of the soil as it cools off and heats up. In hot-summer weather, mulch helps keep plant roots cooler, thus protecting from root rot.
